The following pieces of work are the research that we have conducted to help us plan our film opening and decide what kind of things to include in it. We will use the research by applying our knowledge and we will make the decisions for our final film opening, using this research.

LOOKING AT PRODUCTION LOGOS

This is a collage of the production logos that movies, each production logo needs to be unique to differentiate themselves to others. For example, the Pixar production logo has a lamp has its "I" to give it a sense of uniqueness. Some production logos such as the 20th Century Fox stand out as it stays in the audiences mind. Also production logos always seem to stand out at the start of the film as it's something that should stick in the audience's head. Moreover the colours are normally bright and bold, but sometimes the colour is changed to match the genre of the film. The purpose of this research was to find out how we should construct our production logo. With the help of this research we decided to do a production logo which matches our genre.

By researching into the typical conventions of film openings, it has given us an insight and an idea of what to include in our own film opening. With this information, it has given us inspiration on how to start our opening. Moreover, we also found out what to include in general films openings, by conducting this research we can apply it to our choice of genre, which is thriller.

ART HOUSE CINEMA AND BLOCKBUSTER FILMS

As part of our research, we decided to research into the differences between art house cinema films and blockbuster films. Although our film opening won't be distributed, we wanted to research art house cinema films to get an idea of how they work. We are aware that our opening won't be a blockbuster, as we don't have resources that high budget films do, therefore the research we have conducted on art house cinema films is useful since our opening will be similar to their kind of movies, as they are low budget.

MISE EN SCENE OF THRILLER FILMS

The following research on the mise en scene of thriller movies has helped us significantly as it has given us a rough idea on what to include and how to make a good thriller film opening. We researched into the smallest details of the thriller genre as it is one that generally illustrates realistic situations and therefore it has benefitted us as we want to make our opening as convincing as possible.

LIGHTING
-low key and dark lighting is used in thriller films, as it sets the scene of being mysterious
-the atmosphere is usually tense therefore by having dark lighting it works well
-colours are also a key convention, for example black can be associated with death and gloomy things

SETTING
-the settings of thriller usually take place in dark alleys, mental institutions, isolated areas, big houses, or even small houses etc.
-there are never many bright colours in thriller movies, dark colours are more appropriate as it is suitable for the genre, the atmosphere and the mood that is trying to be created

LIGHTING
-low key lighting is generally used in thriller films, as it sets the scene which is intended on being sinister, mysterious and dark
-the atmosphere is potentially supposed to be tense and unsettling, therefore the use of low key lighting is effective
-colours are a key convention as we associate them with thoughts and feelings, e.g. red symbolises danger or love

SETTING
-the typical settings an audience would suspect thriller movies to take place in are dark alleys, mental institutions, isolated areas, etc.
-usually a small range of colours are used in settings, for thriller movies

SOUND
-usually the use of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds are used in order to create a sense of suspense as well as trying to portray the situation to be real
-the music used in thriller films usually starts slowly and gradually increases in tempo as well as volume

PROPS
-in thriller films, props often determine the narrative as well as the identity of the character
-typically, weapons are used by the villains to reinforce violence and fear
-mobile phones, laptops, gadgets are generally used in thriller films

COSTUME
-the costume for thriller movies must be life like as the audience need to be able to believe them
-generally, in thriller films, the villains wear dark clothes to enhance their mystery and menacing nature
-whereas the victim possibly usually wear ripped, blood stained clothes in order to show their weakness and vulnerability; connotes that they're being chased

From this research, we are aware of what specific conventions to include in our opening, in order for it to come across as a thriller film to the audience. We will decide carefully on the kind of sounds we should include to create an appropriate atmosphere, which links to the genre of thriller. In addition, we will choose a suitable location as well as a realistic one for our opening and make sure that the lighting matches the mood and story we are trying to create.

LOCATION FOR THRILLER FILMS

Our researched showed to create a thriller movie it had a mass budget. This was not possible for our film opening as we were students with a limited budget. The settings which we had to use was a house in which we asked permission to use. This cost us nothing as it was a favour done by one of our friends. However this means that we couldn't use things such as cars, planes or even an empty dark house as it may be taken as trespassing.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Our target audience for the thriller genre will be most appropriate for individuals who are 18 and over due to the fact that most thriller movies are targetted at this specific age group. To further develop our research we carried out a quesitonnaire in order to get an audience profile for our thriller genre. the answers we got from the public supported out initial idea of choosing that specific age group. Our prediciton the viewers that are above 18 were correct as most people tend to watch thriller films once they are young adults, the questionnaire also revealed to us that the majority of the poeple that undertook the questionnaire tend to enjoy both slow RnB and Pop, their favourite place to eat is subway they also have a favourite place to shop which is H&M and Primark. by looking at these answers we can include clothes from these shops for our actress to wear, we can also include some sort of hint towards Subway.

To find the target audience to thriller movies we had to research many movies within the genre. We done this research on the target audience for thriller movies to give us an idea of who we were going to target. The research allowed us to see that cross genre thriller movies have different audiences to standard thriller movies.
